Tracing

Tracing dotted lines are an oldie but a good way to develop pre-writing skills, which occur in pre-school and early Kindergarten (first year of schooling). While it seems straight forward, being able to trace dotted lines or fluency patterns involve a lot of skill: visual perceptual skills to see the line and track from left to right, crossing midline with pencil to work from left to right, bilateral integration to hold and stabilise the page with non-dominant hand, and attention to remain focused to complete the task. Download and print these free resources to practise tracing along the lines.

Cutting Skills

Learning to use scissors is an important part of early childhood. Children enjoy the process of snipping paper in half and having the responsibility of using scissors. Practising cutting along straight lines is one way to improve cutting skills. Try some of these free activities to develop their skills! Hand strength is another important aspect of developing cutting skills: we use the small intrinsic muscles of the inner hand (palm) to squeeze the scissors open and shut. To improve hand strength, cutting hardened (frozen) play dough or thick cardboard can be fun also!
